Our HISTORY

Lions Clubs International celebrated its 100th Anniversary on June 17, 2017.   In 1917, Melvin Jones and a group of businessmen in Chicago, Illinois to put their talents to work improving their communities. Lions International grew rapidly throughout the country and in 1925, Helen Keller gave a speech at the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to be “…knights of the blind.” The Lions motto is “We Serve.”

The Woodlands Lions Club was chartered in 1981 to serve the growing needs of its master-planned community, The Woodlands, Texas. The Woodlands Lions Club is a non-profit organization registered under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code.

From its early beginnings, the club heeded the call of Helen Keller. With that inspiration, the clubs’ major service project is an extensive Sight Program, which provides eye exams & eyeglasses for needy school-aged children from some 18-area schools. The club supports other Sight Conservation efforts through the Leader Dog Program, the Lighthouse for the Blind, Lions Eye Bank of Texas and the World Services for the Blind. A very active Sight Awareness Committee conducts community projects such as used eyeglass collections and eye exams for area elementary school children.

The Woodlands Lions continue to support the youth of our area through projects like the peace poster contestsscholarships to area seniors, along with sponsoring The Woodlands College Park High School LEO Club. The motto of Lions International is “We Serve” and The Woodlands Lions Club and its members are committed to service in their community, their country, and their world.

"The Lions Clubs have 48,000 clubs in 210 Countries... with more than 1.4 million active members!"
